I know that Christmas brings on many changes in routine. Here are a few key things to help:
Get enough sleep and rest in the day.
A change in sleep patterns is disastrous for us and often makes us more emotional/sensitive.
Keep it simple. We get overwhelmed with everything going on and all of the extra decisions we have to make.
Decide before you go out or before you get to the kitchen, what it is you want to eat. You may decide to just take a bite of 2 or 3 desserts instead of eating 2 or 3 squares.
Stay away from white flour, white potatoes, white rice or eating too much sugar – remember that often times, white foods turn into sugar and eating too much sugar can cause hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia or diabetes. Sugar is processed in the frontal lobe where we lack dopamine and centres often don’t work properly.
Christmas also means buying gifts…hopefully not impulse buying. Keep track of what you spend. Budgeting is often difficult for us ADHDers, it’s so much harder at Christmas time. We want to please everyone.
May I suggest you start with yourself? Sit down and make a list of everyone you want to buy for and put a price next to each name. Check to see if this is realistic for your budget. You still have to pay bills, rent, food, any insurances and so on. Be realistic about what extra money you CAN spend. I suggest you DON’T use credit cards or debit cards. Just cash. Yes some people still use cash.
It’s ok if you have to come up with creative, homemade gifts. After all you have ADHD…Creativity is where you excel!
During this time, DO A LOT OF DEEP BREATHING, PAUSING, CHUNKING, VIGOROUS EXERCISING AND HAVE FUN EVERY DAY! Remember; to the ADHD brain, FUN IS POWER!
IF YOU DON’T HAVE ADHD, be kind to those who do. This is a time of so much over stimulation, it’s hard just to get through the day. It is not the best time to be adding tasks or errands to our list.
Please ask us what we CAN do to help instead of deciding for us. Expect that we will probably not meet your expectations. We want to but sometimes just can’t. If you can stop yourself from expecting anything, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Praise what we do well, let go of what we can’t achieve. Remember that when we are having fun and over focusing on something of interest, it often allows us to do those tasks that we are not interested in.
Mix up everything with fun, joy and words of affirmation. Most of us need those things to thrive.
